Why DIY Weddings Aren't Always Cheaper (and what couples don't see coming)

There’s something incredibly appealing about a DIY wedding. It feels personal. Intentional. A chance to step away from tradition and create something that truly reflects you as a couple.
With Pinterest boards full of handmade signage, curated tablescapes and “budget-friendly” hacks, it’s easy to see why so many couples are drawn to the idea. And in some cases, DIY can work beautifully.
But what’s often less visible, and rarely spoken about, is that DIY doesn’t always mean cheaper. In fact, it can sometimes cost more, financially, emotionally, and in time.
The Pinterest vs Reality Gap
The inspiration images we all fall in love with are often styled shoots or professionally executed weddings. Behind that effortlessly relaxed setup is usually a team of suppliers: planners, stylists, florists, and coordinators bringing everything together seamlessly.
Recreating that look yourself isn’t impossible, but it does require time, organisation, and a clear understanding of what’s actually involved. What looks like a simple candle arrangement or welcome sign often includes sourcing, transport, setup, styling, and clearing down afterwards.
The Hidden Costs No One Talks About
When couples choose DIY, the initial thinking is often: “We’ll save money by doing it ourselves.”
The reality tends to include:
Multiple smaller purchases that quickly add up
Delivery fees and minimum spend requirements
Storage (where does everything go in the months leading up?)
Transport (who is moving everything to and from the venue?)
Breakages, replacements, and last-minute extras
Then there’s the cost of your time. Evenings spent assembling favours, weekends spent sourcing décor, and the mental load of managing it all alongside everyday life.
Who Actually Sets It Up on the Day?

This is often the biggest oversight.
On the morning of your wedding, someone still needs to:
Deliver all DIY items to the venue
Set up tables, signage, and styling details
Coordinate suppliers as they arrive
Ensure everything looks as you imagined
Without a dedicated person managing this, it usually falls to family, friends, or even you. Now nobody wants to play project manager or stylist on their wedding day, do they?!
This is where the experience can start to shift. Instead of a calm, exciting lead-up to your day, it becomes a logistical exercise.
When DIY Does Make Sense
DIY isn’t something to avoid entirely, it’s about being intentional with it.
It works beautifully when:
It’s focused on personal touches (like handwritten notes or meaningful details)
It’s manageable in scale
You have support in place to handle setup and coordination
Where it becomes overwhelming is when couples try to DIY the entire wedding, from design to logistics to execution.
How to Get the Look Without the Stress

The key isn’t removing personality, it’s protecting your experience.
You can absolutely have a wedding that feels personal, creative and detail-led without taking everything on yourself. It’s about knowing what to hold onto, and what to hand over.
Because ultimately, your wedding day shouldn’t feel like a project you’re still managing.
It should feel like a moment you’re fully present in, knowing that everything you’ve planned is being brought to life, exactly as you envisioned.
If you're set on DIY'ing some or all of your wedding, make sure you have that dedicated person to support you in the setup. For those not wanting to commit to a full day of wedding management, I offer a half day wedding coordination, in which I can be that person, just for you.
